Men's Fencing Adds Five Newcomers

Elsayed, Goeddeke, Miller, Oronowicz and Santos became Warriors earlier this fall.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's fencing program, under the direction of second-year head coach Andy Tulleners, has added five freshmen to strengthen this year's squad.

Joining the Warriors this fall were epeeists Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School) and Lance Miller (Freeport, Mich. / Lowell), foilists Kuba Oronowicz (Clarkston, Mich.) and Carlos Santos (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Grand Rapids), and sabreist Brendan Goeddeke (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren De La Salle).

"We have a strong contingent of additions to our men's team this year," commented Tulleners.  "We have a strong cadre of incoming fencers from the local Michigan fencing community and incoming international and Olympic experience being added to the squad.  I am looking forward to seeing our first work with our veterans on the team as we go throughout season."

Mahmoud Elsayed, 6-2, 184, Epee, Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School
Summer - 2024:  Competed in the men's team epee competition for his native Egypt in the Paris Olympics ... compiled a 1-5-2 record but was only out-scored 32-25 with four of his setbacks by two points or less (5-4, 3-1, 4-2 and 4-2).

High School:  A 2023 graduate of El Nasr Official Language School ... finished 11th at the 2024 World Junior Championships in Saudi Arabia ... compiled a 5-1 record in pool play and was +12 (29-17) ... in direct elimination, defeated Barsbek Raiymbekov (Kyrgyzstan), Matthew Buelau (Germany) and Markus Salm (Estonia) to reach the round of 16, where he fell to Erik Tobias (Estonia) ... in the team competition, he went 1-1-1 (13-13) in a win over Turkey, followed by a 1-2 mark against China (13-18) in a 45-37 win for Egypt, before Egypt fell to France in the quarterfinals (0-1-1, 9-12) ... placed third at the 2024 African Junior Championships ... went 5-0 and +19 (25-6) in pool play and entered direct elimination as the No. 2 seed ... won two direct elimination bouts before falling 15-12 to countryman Youssef Shamel in the semifinals ... went 3-0 (15-7) in the team competition in a 45-19 win over Morocco, followed by another 3-0 mark (15-3) in a win over Tunisia ... in the gold medal win over South Africa, compiled a 2-1 record (14-11) helping Egypt to the title ... link to bio on FIE.

 A 2024 graduate of Warren De La Salle ... spent one year at HIgh Point Virtual Academy ... competed for the Renaissance Fencing Club ... won 83 bouts in 2023-24 after compiling 44 victories the year before ... posted a pair of victories at the 2024 Division III men's sabre at the summer nationals ... was victorious in five bouts at the 2024 Division II mixed sabre in May of 2024 ... went 3-3 at the 2024 Division 1-A men's sabre at the Windy City ROC ... finished third at the 2024 RFC Division II mixed sabre with a 6-3 pool record followed by a 15-6 triumph in the quarterfinals ... placed first out of six competitors at the 20024 Root Beer Mug mixed sabre.
