South Bend, Ind. -- The Wayne State University men's fencing squad collected four wins while competing at the DeCicco Duals. The event was hosted by the University of Notre Dame with competition being held in the Castellan Family Fencing Center.
WSU won four of its seven team bouts. The wins came against Florida (20-7), Detroit Mercy (19-6 with two double forfeits), Northwestern (17-10), and Cleveland State (16-11).
The Green and Gold fell to Notre Dame (22-5), Lawrence (14-13), and Georgia Tech (20-7).
SABRE RESULTS
Two Wayne State fencers competed in the sabre weapon, those being
Zeyad Nofal (Cairo, Egypt / Newcastle International School) and
Brendan Goeddeke (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren De La Salle).
Nofal collected 15 wins to just one loss. The redshirt freshman went 3-0 in bouts against Florida, Northwestern, Lawrence, and Cleveland State. He earned one more win in his only bout against Detroit Mercy, along with a 2-1 mark vs. Notre Dame.
Goeddeke finished the competition with a 9-9 bout record, that included a 2-0 performance against Northwestern. He added two wins against Florida, Georgia Tech, and Cleveland State.
FOIL RESULTS
A total of six student-athletes saw action in the foil weapon, as
Sam Gneuhs (Mason, Ohio / William Mason),
Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich. / International Academy / Berkley),
Carlos Santos (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Grand Rapids),
Jakub Oronowicz (Clarkston, Mich.),
Ethan Leung (Hong Kong / Yew Chung International School of Shanghai [YCIS]), and
Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill) all represented the Green and Gold.
Gneuhs earned seven bout wins to three losses, that included two perfect performances against UF and Northwestern, when he secured 3-0 ledgers vs. both. The sophomore added one more bout win against Lawrence.
Hirsch finished the day with a 4-6 overall record, competing against Florida, Northwestern, Georgia Tech, and Cleveland State.
Santos compiled a 9-5 bout record, with a 3-0 performance vs. Florida, and went 2-1 against both Northwestern and Georgia Tech.
Oronowicz ended the competition winning six of his 10 bouts, ending the day with a 3-0 performance vs. Cleveland State.
Ethan Leung garnered a 4-5 record, including the sophomore winning all three bouts against CSU.
Gatrell went 1-3 on the day, with his lone win coming against Notre Dame.
EPEE RESULTS
Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.) led the way for the Warriors in the epee weapon, earning a 13-7 bot record that included three 3-0 performances against Florida, Northwestern, and Lawrence.
Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla. / Lincoln Park / Celebration) began the competition by winning all three of his bouts against Florida, finishing with a 9-11 overall record.
Lance Miller (Freeport, Mich. Lowell) earned six bout wins at the event (6-14). The freshman went 2-1 vs. UF while adding wins against Notre Dame, Northwestern, Lawrence, and Cleveland State.
