Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School) saw action at the Satellite World Cup in Split, Croatia.
OSU OPEN
Foil
Five fencers from Wayne State competed in the foil portion of the event, as
Finn McIsaac (West Bloomfield, Mich.),
Sam Gneuhs (Mason, Ohio / William Mason),
Carlos Santos (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Grand Rapids),
Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill), and
Jakub Oronowicz (Clarkston, Mich.) all saw action.
McIsaac tallied a 5-1 mark in pool play, while collecting a +8 touch differential (27-19). The freshman was seeded 14th leading into the direct elimination stage, besting Kedwin Chen 15-3 in the Table of 64. The WSU student-athlete was bested in the Table of 32 by Henry Allen, 15-12.
Gneuhs managed a +2 touch differential along with a 3-3 bout record in pool action, earning the 28th seed in DE. The junior fell 15-5 to Ezra Mundy in the Table fo 64.
Santos posted a 4-2 ledger in pool play, out-touching opponents 23-18 (+5) to snag the No. 23 seed for direct elimination. In DE, Santos collected a 15-9 win against John Kemnitzer before falling 15-3 to Taishi Ozawa in the Table of 32.
Gatrell, in pool No. 7, scored 26 touches while receiving 20 (+6 differential) and secured a 3-3 mark. Gatrell was seeded 26th in DE and earned an impressive 15-2 bout win over Austin Bates in the Table of 64. The Livonia, Mich., product fell in the ensuing round, 15-4 to Wangjie Li.
Oronowicz collected a 4-2 mark in pool play while posting a +13 touch differential (26-23). The sophomore was the No. 16-seeded foilist ahead of DE, and bested Josh Mumford 15-4 to advance to the Table of 32. Oronowicz fell 15-10 to Samuel Freedman, who finished eighth at the event.
Sabre
Hunter Battisfore (Hancock, Mich. / Houghton),
Gabriel Dumoulin (Newtown, Conn.), and
Connor Desautels (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow) represented the Green and Gold in the sabre weapon.
Battisfore impressed early, winning each of his pool bouts for a 6-0 ledger and a +13 touch differential (30-17). The senior earned the No. 5 seed in direct elimination and received a bye in the Table of 64. The Hancock, Mich., native posted a 15-7 victory over Mark Whapham in the Table of 32, before being bested 15-12 in a hard-fought bout to Hank Bauer.
Dumoulin collected a 3-3 record alongside a +12 touch differential in pool play. The freshman entered DE seeded 16th and earned a bye for the Table of 64. Dumoulin advanced to the Table of 16 after a nail-biting 15-14 triumph over Hanho Lee. The WSU student-athlete fell to top-seeded Edward Maklin 15-7 in the Table of 16.
Desautels notched a 4-2 record while mustering a +7 touch differential in pool action. The freshman nabbed a 15-2 victory over Michael McCrae in the Table of 64 before being downed 15-7 by Max Gerstmann in the Table of 32.
SATELLITE WORLD CUP
Sophomore
Mahmoud Elsayed entered the competition ranked No. 17 in the world in senior epee and was tabbed as the No. 2-seeded individual ahead of the competition. At the Satellite World Cup, Elsayed collected a 4-2 bout record in pool play, while posting a +11 touch differential, which was the largest in his pool. Elsayed claimed the No. 25 seed and received a bye for the Table of 128, advancing straight to the Table of 64. The sophomore began direct elimination by defeating Italy's Giuseppe Torrisi 15-2 in the opening bout, to advance to the Table of 32. The WSU student-athlete fell 13-12 to Jan Golobic, placing 25th.
