COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's fencing team tallied a 3-1 ledger at The Ohio State University's OSU Duals on Sunday, October 12, at the French Field House.
WSU nabbed victories over Purdue University (22-5), OSU's club team (19-8), and Cleveland State University (18-9), while suffering a loss to Ohio State's varsity squad (26-1).
EPEE
Four student-athletes competed for the Warriors in the epee, as
Lance Miller (Freeport, Mich. / Lowell),
Justin Chenh (Falls Church, Va.),
Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.), and
Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla. / Lincoln Park / Celebration) each saw action.
Miller totaled a 4-4 bout record, grabbing a pair of victories against the Boilermakers, one triumph over a fencer from Ohio State's club team, and one win in a bout against CSU.
Chenh, in his WSU debut, posted a 5-7 mark in the epee. The freshman claimed a 2-1 ledger in bouts against Purdue and Cleveland State, while earning another win over a student-athlete from the OSU club team.
Heim went 3-0 in bouts with members of the Purdue team and added wins against individuals from both the Ohio State club team and the Vikings. The senior earned a 5-4 bout record during the event.
Dinkins finished the day with a 4-3 ledger that included wins over student-athletes from Cleveland State, and Ohio State. The senior was the lone member of the men's squad to tally a victory against OSU's varsity squad.
SABRE
In the sabre, the Green and Gold had four individuals fence. Those four were
Connor Desautels (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow),
Brendan Goeddeke (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren De La Salle),
Gwyd Perry (Bloomfield, Mich.), and
Gabriel Dumoulin (Newtown, Conn.).
Desautels nabbed the most victories in the sabre weapon, as the freshman earned a 6-3 bout ledger that included a 3-0 performance against Purdue, a 2-0 outing with the OSU club team, and one more win in a bout with CSU.
Goeddeke posted a 5-4 record with 2-1 performances in bouts against the Boilermakers and the Buckeyes' club squad. He earned one more win in a competition with the Vikings.
Perry and Dumoulin both went 4-5 on the day, with the Bloomfield, Mich., product earning wins in bouts against Purdue, Ohio State's club team, and CSU, while his fellow freshman nabbed wins over OSU's club squad and Cleveland State.
FOIL
Jakub Oronowicz (Clarkston, Mich.),
Josiah Atkinson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer),
Carlos Santos (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Grand Rapids),
Lukas Tsao (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.),
Finn McIsaac (West Bloomfield, Mich.), and
Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill) each represented Wayne State in the foil.
Santos impressed with an 8-1 bout ledger that included a pair of 3-0 outings against Purdue and the club team of Ohio State.
Atkinson posted six wins in nine bouts, with a 3-0 mark in the contest with OSU's club team and a 2-1 ledger against Purdue.
Oronowicz, Tsao, and McIsaac each went 3-2 during the duals. The sophomore earned all of his wins against the Boilermakers, going 3-0, while Tsao went 3-0 vs. the club team for the Buckeyes. McIsaac posted a 3-0 mark in bouts with Cleveland State.
Gatrell saw action against Ohio State, falling in each of his three bouts.
