LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. -- Multiple student-athletes of the Wayne State University fencing program competed at Northwestern University's Remenyik Open this past weekend (October 18-19).
The event was broken into two categories, the first being the Regional Open Circuit (ROC) and the second being the Regional Junior Cadet Circuit (JRCC).
FOIL
Three members of WSU's men's fencing squad saw action in the Division 1-A Men's Foil event. Those three were Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill), Finn McIsaac (West Bloomfield, Mich.), and Sam Gneuhs (Mason, Ohio William Mason). Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) of the women's fencing team competed in the Division 1-A Women's Foil Event. McIsaac had bouts in the Junior Men's Foil event as well.
Gatrell found success early, collecting a 5-1 record in pool play, while posting a +21 touch differential (29-8). The senior earned a bye in the Table of 128 and advanced to the Gold Medal Strip after collecting five more victories (15-4, 15-13, 15-11, 15-12, and 15-12) during direct elimination. In the final bout, Gatrell fell 15-13 in a hard-fought battle against Christopher Lee, placing second overall in D1-A Men's Foil.
McIsaac secured a bye in the Table of 128 as well, after nabbing a 5-1 ledger in pool action and having a touch differential of +13 (27-14). The West Bloomfield, Mich., native made his way to the Table of 16 after a pair of triumphs. The WSU student-athlete was bested 15-8 by William Bailey.
Gneuhs was the final member of the Green and Gold to compete in the D1-A section of men's foil, securing a 3-3 mark while out-touching opponents 25-20. The junior won his opening bout in direct elimination 15-3 before falling 15-9 to Graydon Schulze-Kalt in the Table of 64
Mancini went 4-1 in bouts during pool play, while owning a +16 touch differential (24-8). After having a bye in the Table of 128, the senior collected a 15-2 victory to advance to the Table of 32, where she fell 15-4 to Bridgette Ouyang.
SABRE
Gwyd Perry (Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) was the lone fencer to compete in the sabre weapon, seeing action in both the ROC and JRCC. In the ROC, Perry posted a perfect 6-0 bout ledger that included a +18 touch differential (30-12) during pool play. The freshman earned the No. 3 seed in direct elimination and a bye in the Table of 64. Perry fell 15-14 in the Table of 32.
In the junior competition, the Newtown, Conn., product went 2-4 in pool play, and fell during the Table of 32 of the direct elimination stage 15-5.
EPEE
Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.) represented the Green and Gold in the epee, posting a 5-1 mark while tallying a +9 touch differential (26-17). The WSU student-athlete had a bye during the Table of 128 and collected a pair of victories in his ensuing two bouts (15-9, 15-8). Heim was bested in the Table of 16 15-9, by the event's top-seeded epeeist, Julian Spier.
UP NEXT
The Wayne State fencing program will next be in action on Saturday, November 8, for The Ohio State University's Elite Invitational. The invitational will be a two-day event with bouts in the French Field House.
