Men's Fencing Wraps Second Day of CCFC Championships

Two Warriors earned individual medals.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's fencing team has concluded its final day of the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Championships on Sunday afternoon.  The competition consisted of individual events only.

EPEE
In the Epee Weapon, Lance Miller (Freeport, Mich. / Lowell), Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif. / San Francisco School of the Arts), Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School), Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla. / Lincoln Park / Celebration), and Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.) all competed for WSU.

Miller competed in five bouts in pool play, earning one victory while being -14 in touch differential.

Garrett collected a 5-0 record in the first round while being +11 in touch differential.  In round two, the junior earned three wins in five bouts with a 21-19 touch differential.  Garret placed ninth, just missing the cut for the direct elimination stage.

Elsayed collected a 9-1 overall record across both rounds of pool competition.  Entering the direct elimination stage, the freshman was ranked first and made his way to the finals bout after earning a 15-9 victory in the table of eight, and a 15-11 triumph in his semi-final bout.  In the finals, the WSU student-athlete prevailed over Nowell Gibson of The Ohio State University 15-11, finishing in first place in the epee weapon.

Dinkins went 5-5 in the first and second rounds, with an impressive +10 touch differential in the first (+5 overall).  The Warrior finished 13th overall.

Heim earned a 2-2 ledger in the first round of pool play and a 1-4 mark in the second round.  The junior placed 15th.

FOIL
In the foil weapon, six Green and Gold fencers appeared.

Sam Gneuhs (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) earned one bout win while being defeated in five.  The sophomore finished the day with a -13 touch differential.

Ethan Leung (Hong Kong / Yew Chung International School of Shanghai [YCIS]) totaled a 6-6 bout mark and was +7 in touch deferential in pool play.  In the direct elimination stage, the Warrior was ranked eighth, and fell to the eventual foil champion, Justin Vogler, 15-9 in the table of eight.

Jakub Oronowicz (Clarkston, Mich.) ended the day 7-4 with a +13 touch differential.  The freshman finished 11th overall.

Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich. / International Academy / Berkley) notched a 3-3 record in the first round of pool play but was unable to earn a victory in the second round (0-5), finishing 17th overall.

Mitchell Gatrell (Lavonia, Mich. / Churchill) tallied a 5-5 mark across both rounds of pool play with a -5 point differential.  The student-athlete's performance earned him a 12th place finish.

Carlos Santos (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Grand Rapids) represented Wayne State as well, placing 18th with a 3-7 overall mark.

SABRE
Two Wayne State student-athletes competed in sabre, as Brendan Goeddeke (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) and Zeyad Nofal (Cairo, Egypt / Newcastle International School) both participated in that weapon.

Nofal impressed in pool play, compiling a 10-1 bout record and entering the direct elimination stage ranked first.  The redshirt freshman collected two wins as he defeated Eli Freyre De Andre 15-8 and Samuel Rightler 15-13 on his way to the finals round.  In his finals bout, the Warrior fell 15-10 to Nolan Williams, placing second in sabre.

Goeddeke competed in five bouts but was unable to claim a victory, finishing 0-5 in pool competition.
