INDIANAPOLIS -- The Wayne State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their five-day stay at the NCAA Championships on Tuesday at the IU Natatorium. The Warriors swam in the 800 free relay while all three male divers officially qualified for the next four days of nationals.
Starting with the men, Wayne State finished in seventh place for the 800 free relay for 24 points with a time of 6:29.25. The Warriors' quartet consisted of
Olin Charnstrom (Oxford, Mich.),
Trevor Jones (Farmington, Mich.),
Khalil Ben Ajmia (Tunis, Tunisia / Lycée Pierre De Coubertin), and
Clayton Kinnard (Dexter, Mich.).
On the diving board,
Julio Osuna (Tijuana, Mexico / Instituto Mexico [Indianapolis]),
John Martin (Brownstown, Mich. / Woodhaven) and
Max Wasiniak (Huron, Ohio) are all moving on.
Osuna placed second at both one meter (313.90) and three meters (318.00). Martin finished in a tie-for-14th (250.90) and fifth (271.15), respectively. As for Wasiniak, he was slotted in 11th (258.30) for the lower board and 15th (244.45) for the higher. For this week's NCAA Championships, the three meter prelims/finals will take place on Thursday with the one-meter event to happen on Saturday.
Switching gears to the women, WSU touched the wall in 13th for eight points thanks to a mark of 7:26.65. Wayne State's squad included
Barbara Munoz (Yumbo, Colombia / Comfandi Yumbo),
Emily Hedley (Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom / Whitley Bay),
Elly Belmore (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview), and
Alli Vassilakos (Clarkston, Mich. [Carthage College]).
In the diving well, starting at one meter,
Alicia Viaches (East Lansing, Mich. / Haslett) and
Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) placed 35th (185.25) and 42nd (158.40), respectively. Up on the taller height, Viaches was 22nd (210.40) and Wadsworth-Curcuru was 43rd (173.60).
Preliminary action on Wednesday will begin at 10 a.m.
