Men's Golf Leads the Field Halfway Through ODU Tournament

Wayne State closed round one with a 15-team low score of 289, one over par.

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. -- The 25th-ranked Wayne State University men's golf team picked up right where it left off from the fall season for round one of Ohio Dominican's Pawleys Island Beach Bash on Wednesday.  Playing at The Founders Club, the Warriors carded a one-over 289 to lead the 15-team field while being paced individually by Max Leppelmeier (Wauseon, Ohio / Pettisville) and Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont. / General Amherst).  Leppelmeier and DiCarlo are tied-for-first, each with a four-under 68.

"After a very sluggish start, Max and Josh really got it going," said head coach Mike Horn.  "They both finished strong and saved our rear end today.  Didn't really get anybody else going the entire day.  There were a few bright spots and bright stretches, but we have a lot to improve upon tomorrow.  This is a very good field, including two teams ranked ahead of us.  I know we can get a lot more out of the rest of the lineup and if we can do that, we will be in great shape.

This truly is a team game where you have to count on everybody in the lineup contributing.  There aren't too many days we can have as many trouble spots as we did today and still hold the lead.  That's a testament to how well Max and Josh played today.  I look forward to a very well-rounded team effort tomorrow.  It would be nice to handle our business in round two and have a very fun trip home.  We've got to be ready from the very first tee shot tomorrow morning, and the guys I know will be.  Go Warriors!!"
