University Park, Pa. -- The Wayne State University men's fencing team had multiple student-athletes compete in the first day of the 2025 NCAA Championships. The event is being hosted by Penn State University at the Multi-Sport Facility.
Epee
Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School) was the lone Warrior to compete in the epee weapon, tallying a 4-3 bout record while having a +2 touch differential (25-23) after the first round of pool play.
The freshman won five more bouts, concluding the first day with a 9-6 record and holding a +5 touch differential (58-53)
FOIL
Ethan Leung (Hong Kong / Yew Chung International School of Shanghai [YCIS]) represented WSU in the foil weapon. The sophomore collected a 1-6 ledger in the first round of pool play, with his sole victory being a 5-1 win over Thomas Craley of Lawrence University. Leung was unable to win another bout, finishing with a 1-14 mark.
SABRE
Zeyad Nofal (Cairo, Egypt / Newcastle International School) competed for Wayne State in sabre, earning a 3-4 mark in the first round of pool play, while being +1 in touches (27-26).
The redshirt freshman claimed three more bout victories, ending the first day of competition with a 6-9 overall record and a -9 touch differential (51-60).
