University Park, Pa. -- Three members of the Wayne State University men's fencing program finished competition at the 2025 NCAA Championships on Friday. WSU is in 14th place following the men's competition, with the final results to follow after the completion of the women's championships (March 22-23).
Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School),
Ethan Leung (Hong Kong / Yew Chung International School of Shanghai [YCIS]), and
Zeyad Nofal (Cairo, Egypt / Newcastle International School) were the student-athletes that represented the Green and Gold.
EPEE
Elsayed earned a 14-8 ledger in pool play, while having a +15 touch differential (89-74). Â Following his performance in pool play, the freshman entered the direct elimination stage seeded fourth.
In direct elimination, Elsayed fell in the semi-final bout 15-14 to his brother and eventual National Champion, Mohamed Elsayed of Long Island University.
Due to his overall performance, the WSU student-athlete finished tied-for-third and earned First Team All-American Honors.
FOIL
Leung finished with a 1-22 bout record over the two-day event, earning his win over Lawrence's Thomas Craley. Â The sophomore took down the Viking 5-1. Â Leung fell 5-4 in four bouts.
SABRE
After finishing the first day with a 6-9 overall ledger, Nofal would medically withdrawal from the competition.Â
