Elsayed Wins Gold Medal at African Championships

Luanda, Angola -- Wayne State University fencing student-athlete Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School) appeared at the Juniors and Cadets African Championships this past weekend (March 1-3).  The Warrior competed both individually and as a member of Team Egypt.  

INDIVIDUAL EPEE
While competing individually, Elsayed won all six of his bouts in pool play with an impressive +24 touch differential (30-6).  The freshman's efforts placed him as the No. 1 seed ahead of the direct elimination stage.

Elsayed made his way to the Finals bout after prevailing in the Table of 16 (15-3), Table of Eight (15-8) and in the Semifinals (15-8).  In the Finals bout, the Warrior competed against fellow Team Egypt member Youssef Shamel.  Elsayed triumphed 15-10, earning the individual Gold Medal.

TEAM EPEE
Egypt earned a bye in the Table of Eight and faced Angola in the Semifinals.  Against Angola, Egypt claimed a 45-20 victory as Elsayed garnered a +8 touch differential (5-4, 5-2, 5-1).   The squad continued its success in the Finals bout, defeating South Africa 45-32 to earn the Gold Medal with the Warrior notching a +6 touch differential (4-1, 5-3, 5-4).
