WUXI, China -- Wayne State University men's fencing student-athlete
Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School) competed at the Junior - Cadet World Championships this week, where he won the gold medal in the Junior Men's Epee and was named World Champion.
The event hosted over 1,000 fencers from roughly 100 different countries. The World Championships had representation from all three weapons (epee, foil, and sabre) for both men and women.
Elsayed posted a perfect 6-0 bout record in pool play while having a +15 touch differential (30-15). The talented freshman was seeded fifth heading into the direct-elimination stage where he received a first-round bye. The Warrior nabbed wins against Adrian Grunert of Slovakia (15-7), Cristiano Sena of Italy (15-12), Dohyun Kim of South Korea (15-9), Shengwei Peng of China (15-7), and Nathaniel Wimmer of the United States of America (15-11) to advance to the semi-final round. In the semi final, Elsayed battled with Maksym Perchuk of Ukraine and prevailed 15-9, earning his spot in the championship bout. The freshman was matched with Matteo Galassi of Italy on the gold-medal strip. Elsayed triumphed over Galassi 15-12, laying claim to the gold medal and being named World Champion.
