Men's Golf Shoots Best Round At Super Regionals To Conclude Season

COUNTRY CLUB, Mo. -- The 2024-25 Wayne State University men's golf campaign came to a close on Saturday with the final round of the NCAA Midwest/Central Super Regional.  The Warriors shot their best round of the tournament (291) and moved up two spots to tie-for-15th with a 54-hole score of 885.

The top four teams to advance to the national championships from the Super Regional were Central Oklahoma (-4), Missouri-St. Louis (+10), Missouri S&T (+14) and Central Missouri (+15).  Rounding out the top 10 were Harding (+17), Findlay (+17), Saginaw Valley State (+22), Ferris State (+23), Ohio Dominican (+25) and Grand Valley State (+25).

The remaining 10 schools were Southern Arkansas (+27), Washburn (+29), Concordia-St. Paul (+31), Henderson State (+31), WAYNE STATE (+33), Hillsdale (+33), Arkansas Tech (+35), Arkansas-Fort Smith (+36), Ashland (+42), and Winona State (+43).

Leading WSU during the final round was senior Max Leppelmeier (Wauseon, Ohio / Pettisville) with a one-under 70 in a round that included five birdies.  Graduate student Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont.) shot an even par 71 with three birdies.  Meanwhile, graduate student Luc Warnock (McGregor, Ont.) carded a 72 with a pair of birdies, and redshirt senior Ian Smith (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) had a 78.  Rounding out the quintet was senior Tyler Hurtubise (Essex, Ont.) with an 80.

For the tournament, DiCarlo and Warnock tied-for-27th at six over par, while Leppelmeier was tied-for-36th at +7.  Smith tied-for-88th (+15) and Hurtubise was 98th (+23).

All five Warriors that competed at the Super Regional have completed their eligibility, but the cupboard is not bare for head coach Mike Horn, who completed his 24th season at the helm of the WSU men's golf program.  With the return of Andrew Daily and Josh Lahner, along with Harrison Chapman and Shawn Sehra, plus freshmen Troy Chapman and Jack Julian who redshirted this past year, Wayne State is poised to defend its GLIAC Championship in 2026.
