Fencing Garners Multiple USFCA Awards

DETROIT -- Wayne State University assistant fencing coach Ahmed Elsayed and student-athlete Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School) both garnered recognition from the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) as Ahmed was voted Men's Team Assistant Coach of the Year and Mahmoud earned both Men's Team Epee Athlete of the Year and Epee Newcomer of the Year.

A nationwide vote of USFCA member fencing programs determined all awards.

Ahmed Elsayed receives the honor after leading the men's and women's epee squads to a third and second-place finish at the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Tournament and helping Mahmoud finish tied-for-third at the NCAA Championships and earn First-Team All-American honors.  Ahmed helped lead seven WSU student-athletes to CCFC All-Conference recognition as  Mahmoud Elsayed, Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla. / Lincoln Park / Celebration), Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary / Vörösmarty Mihály), Salma Abdrabou (Cairo, Egypt Dar El Tarbiah IGCSE), Ethan Leung (Hong Kong / Yew Chung International School of Shanghai [YCIS]), Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy / Liceo Linguistico Niccolò Machiavelli), and Zeyad Nofal (Cairo, Egypt / Newcastle International School) all garnered recognition.  M. Elsayed, Dinkins, Galfalvy, and Abdrabou earned recognition in the epee weapon, Leung and Mancini garnered honors in the foil weapon, and Nofal received an all-conference mark in the Sabre weapon.

Mahmoud Elsayed had a successful rookie campaign with the Green and Gold.  The freshman earned First-Team All-CCFC honors after finishing first in the epee weapon at the conference tournament and helping WSU's men's epee team earn third.  The Wayne State student-athlete had a strong showing at the NCAA Championships as well, battling to the semifinals and finishing tied-for-third, earning First Team All-American honors.  In addition to his performances for the Green and Gold, Elsayed won gold at the Junior Men's Epee World Championship and became World Champion.

Along with the national recognition, multiple WSU fencing student-athletes earned USFCA All-Region honors.  M. Elsayed (men's epee) earned First Team All-Region, while Galfalvy (women's epee) garnered Second Team All-Region honors, and Mancini (women's foil) was named an Honorable Mention.
