Men's Tennis Earns Bid to NCAA Midwest Regional as No. 3 Seed

DETROIT -- The No. 20-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (14-10) received a bid to the NCAA Tournament on Monday night as the No. 3-seed in the Midwest Regional Tournament.  The tournament will be hosted by both Ferris State and the University of Indianapolis.

This year's selection marks the 16th time the WSU men's tennis team has been selected to the tournament and 10th under the guidance of head coach Bryan Morrow.  WSU was the national runner-up in 2022, and advanced to the national quarterfinals in both 2023 and 2024.

The Green and Gold will face No. 6-seeded Northwood on Monday, May 11 in Big Rapids, Mich.  The winner of that match will meet the victor of the contest between No. 2-seed Ferris State and No. 7-seed Drury on Saturday, May 10.  

Eight teams will compete in this year's Midwest Regional as UIndy (#1), Ferris State (#2), Wayne State (#3), Tiffin (#4), Grand Valley State (#5), Northwood (#6), Drury (#7), and Findlay (#8) and all earned bids into the tournament.

Following the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament, the Warriors have a 14-10 record that includes an 10-4 mark within the Midwest region.  Wayne State advanced to the GLIAC Tournament Championship after posting wins over Roosevelt (4-1) and Grand Valley State (4-0), but was bested 4-3 by FSU in another classic battle between the two rivals.

WSU has been ranked in each iteration of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) National Ranking this season and appear as the No. 20-ranked squad currently.  On the singles side, graduate student Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) in viewed as the No. 37-ranked player in the country. 

Klaus and George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) earned First Team All-GLIAC honors in singles, while Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) and Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny) were both named to the All-GLIAC Second Team.  In doubles, Klaus and Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) along with Day and Mathys were voted Second Team All-GLIAC.

In NCAA Championship action, WSU has an all-time record of 18-15.  This marks the fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for the Warriors along with the seventh time in the last eight tournaments (2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026).

A total of 48 teams received bids to the NCAA Tournament with 15 of those squads earning an automatic bid after winning their respective conference tournaments.  

The winner of the 16 regional sections will advance to the NCAA Championship Round of 16, with the men's side scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, through Sunday, May 24, at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Arizona.
