DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team defeated Ashland University on Saturday, winning 174-111 in its first home meet of the season at the Matthaei Natatorium. The Warriors were competing in their second meet in as many days.
The Warriors won 12 of the 16 events. Sophomore
Jayson Hansen (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and freshman
Till Barthel (Hannover, Germany) each won three individual victories for Wayne State. Junior diver
Dylan Szegedi (Oregon, Ohio / St. Francis de Sales) also won on both of the diving boards for the Warriors.
Hansen won the 100 breaststroke (58.49), 200 breaststroke (2:09.89) and 200 individual medley (2:01.07). Hansen won the 200 breaststroke by more than seven seconds and the 100 breaststroke by more than three seconds.
Barthel earned wins in the 50 freestyle (21.56), 100 freestyle (47.20) and 200 freestyle (1:45.25).
Junior
Lucas Fernandez Vilanova (Valencia, Spain) won the 200 backstroke by more than six seconds with a time of 1:53.28. Freshman
Zach Zylstra (Zeeland, Mich. / Zeeland East) finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:59.72.
Junior
Kyle Taylor (Holland, Mich.) earned a win in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:54.07. Freshman
Mitch Bohr (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) was victorious in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.07. Senior
Calvin Reder (Bay City, Mich. / John Glenn) was second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:00.77.
Szegedi won both the one-meter and three-meter competitions, earning scores of 267.95 and 300.05, respectively. Junior
Kevin White (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) finished second on the three-meter board (262.05), while freshman
Adam Littell (Holland, Mich. / Hamilton) was second on the one-meter board (260.20).
The Warriors capped off the team win with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay. The WSU quartet of Barthel, freshman
Josh Schacht (Schoolcraft, Mich. / Mattawan), freshman
Soren Holm (Rodovre, Denmark) and Fernandez Vilanova posted a time of 3:09.30.
Wayne State doesn't return to the pool competitively until Dec. 6-7 when the Warriors travel to the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
