Women's Indoor Track and Field Has Strong Start to 2021-22 Season

Sumrall breaks school record in the 60m dash.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's indoor track and field squad began its 2021-22 campaign Saturday at the Holiday Open hosted by Saginaw Valley State University.

Quoting Coach Lofdahl
"We had very solid opening meet, and we're excited to see where the team will take this in 2022.  Obviously, the biggest highlight was Makayla Sumrall in the 60, breaking Kierra Johnson's school record in the prelims. She ran well in the 60 finals, and the 200, and made her debut in the 4x400 relay as well.  Renae Kutcha had a really nice debut meet with a solid 400 and a great relay leg, as did fellow freshmen Reagan Justice in the mile, and Parys Smith in the 200 and 60 hurdles.  Mikaela Owen ran an excellent 200, MaKayla Rawls and Izzy Taylor threw really well in the weight, and Mikayla Williams picked up where she left off last spring with solid efforts in both triple jump and long jump.

Our depth was evident already in events like the 200 and the 60 hurdles, and only about 60 percent of our roster was competing.  When everyone is out there in January, we'll be a very strong team across nearly every event.  The potential of this team is exceptional."

School Record
Junior Makayla Sumrall (Roseville, Mich.) broke the WSU record for the 60m dash in the prelims clocking in at 7.57, which was also an NCAA Provisional mark. Sumrall broke Kierra Johnson's mark of 7.599 set at the 2016 GLIAC Championships.  Sumrall finished second in the finals with a time of 7.61.

Quoting Makayla Sumrall
"I honestly don't remember much of the race, but when I looked up at the clock I couldn't believe it.  I had a goal to run 7.58 by the end of the season, so to see my dreams come to life so early was very rewarding!  I am so proud of every single person (on the team.).  Lots of accomplishments were met and I think that our team dynamic and culture had an impact."
