Women's Outdoor Track Competes In Final Tune-Ups Before GLIACs

The Wayne State women's outdoor track and field team traveled to both Davenport and Ashland this past weekend, in tune-up meets for the upcoming GLIAC Outdoor Championships this Wednesday through Friday (May 4-6) at the GVSU Track and Field Stadium.

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- At the Davenport Invitational on Friday, three Warrior freshmen distance runners competed in the 5K.  Reagan Justice (Canton, Mich. / Salem) led the way, finishing eighth among collegiate competitors in a time of 17:32.09.  Annalee Misch (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) made her track debut in a WSU uniform, placing fifth in Section 2 in 19:16.08, with Jillian Vera (Saugatuck, Mich.) finishing in 20:23.54.

ASHLAND, Ohio -- Most of the squad competed at the Ashland Alumni Invitational, which this year featured a special tribute to the late AU coach and four-time Olympic hammer thrower Jud Logan.

Senior Teanna McCuaig (Sparta, Mich. / Kent City) made the most of the hyped-up throwing atmosphere, setting personal records (PRs) in the hammer (41.04m) and javelin (32.60m) on Friday, and in the discus (30.70m) on Saturday.  Her javelin mark ranks fifth all-time in WSU history and is the farthest throw since Amy Vangieson in 2019.

Junior MaKayla Rawls (Detroit, Mich. / Birmingham Seaholm) won the regular section of discus with a toss of 41.04m, third best all-time for the Warriors, and senior Kaleigh Flowers (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Kentwood) placed ninth with a distance of 37.64m, which is eighth all-time.  Flowers also hit a season-best 45.15m in the hammer to lead the Warriors in that event.  Freshman Jasmine Correa (West Olive, Mich. / Holland West Ottawa) was WSU's top shot putter, taking 11th place with a toss of 11.63m.

Junior Mikayla Williams (St. Charles, Mich.) placed third in long jump at 5.52m and fourth in triple jump at 11.46m, both of which were season-best jumps.

On the track, freshman Emily Gordon (Northville, Mich.) took more than two seconds off her 800m PR (which came at the GLIAC Indoor Championships) to place second overall, first among collegians, with a 2:14.22 clocking that ranks third all-time for WSU.

Freshman Renae Kutcha (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) led four Warriors in the 200m dash with a 13th-place finish in 26.91, while junior Katherine Ray (Novi, Mich.) and freshman Robin Bresolin (LaSalle, Ont.) both won their heats of the 1500m run in personal best times of 4:55.52 and 5:04.50m, respectively.

Senior Aliyah McDonald (Kingston, Jamaica) led a quintet of Wayne State hurdlers in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a season-best 14.83 in the prelims and taking sixth in the final in 14.88.  Freshman Parys Smith (Keego Harbor, Mich. / West Bloomfield) placed 11th in both the 100m (15.83) and 400m (1:10.13) hurdle events, with season best times in both races.

The WSU 4x100 relay team of McDonald, junior Makayla Sumrall (Roseville, Mich.), senior Yasmine Affes (Northville, Mich.), and freshman Kay-Lee McSwain (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) placed third in 48.53, while the 4x400 relay squad of Affes, Kutcha, sophomore Abigail Dunn (Northville, Mich.), and freshman Makenzie Wellner (Menominee, Mich.) clocked a season-best mark of 3:58.42 to place second.

"This was a good way for us to fine-tune some things for GLIACs, and we saw some folks make big strides in each event group this weekend," said head coach Grant Lofdahl.  "It was important for our program to be at the Ashland meet to help honor Jud Logan, who was a legend in the sport and is sorely missed.  The weather and the competitive atmosphere there were exceptional.

"We need to finalize our conference roster in the next day or two, and get a couple of key pieces back in the lineup, and then we'll be ready to go compete for a championship and to do some things no WSU track and field team has done before."
