Former Wayne State Golfer Joe Juszczyk Wins Michigan Open

Juszczyk was a member of the Warriors from 2005 to 2010.

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. -- Joe Juszczyk, formerly of the Wayne State University men's golf team (2005-10), won the 106th annual Michigan Open on Thursday at Oakland University's Katke-Cousins Golf Course.  Another former Warrior, Grant Haefner (2016-21), placed eighth in the four-day event.

"You learn a lot every time you play and get in contention," said Juszczyk.  "I just tried to keep my head down and keep playing.  It's like, you take care of business, and do what I'm doing.  And if it's good enough, it's good enough.  If not, then, we'll move on."

Juszczyk shot a 12-under 272 (67-67-69-69) for the two-stroke victory and was the only player in the field to shoot four rounds in the 60s.  His former teammate, Haefner, carded a five-under 279 (67-75-69-68). The event's purse was a record $122,500, with $18,000 going to the champion, Juszczyk.

"Joe is one of the best players we've ever had play for Wayne State," said WSU head coach Mike Horn.  "It is amazing to see his hard work and dedication pay off.  Congratulations to the whole Juszczyk family.  A heartfelt congratulations to Lynnsey, Jared, George, and Nancy for helping Joe get to this stage in his golf career.  Joe won six times during his Warrior career.  We are proud of all those victories, this Michigan Open victory and all the victories to come.  Congratulations as well to Grant Haefner as he had one of his best finishes as a professional so far."

Juszczyk played 127 rounds in his four seasons with Wayne State while compiling 9,430 strokes for a 74.25 scoring average.  Haefner totaled 93 rounds and 6,947 shots for a 74.70 average in his five seasons of competition.
