Women's Indoor Track and Field Competes At SVSU Tri-Meet

Warriors win five events.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's indoor track and field squad won five events in taking second place at the SVSU Tri-Meet on Saturday.

TEAM SCORES
Saginaw Valley State won the meet with 72 points, while WSU was second with 61.50 points and Northern Michigan was third with 33.50 points.

QUOTING COACH LOFDAHL
"Makayla Sumrall continued her outstanding season by winning the 60m dash once again, taking the 200m in a new PR, and running a solid leg on the 4x300m relay.  Mikayla Williams had a tough challenge with all three jumping events within an hour or so, but she navigated that pretty well, getting a win in the long jump.

Kenzie Wellner had a very good meet with a PR in the 400m and a quick 4x300m relay leg.  Mikaela Owen also stood out today and had our quickest relay leg of anyone.

Our distance crew really stood out, led by our milers.  Emily Gordon, Thailyia Christensen, and Katherine Ray all set significant personal bests, getting a 1-2-3 sweep.  In the 800m, Emily Esker and Kynnedee Cowles ran well tactically and scored some big points too.  Reagan Justice had a phenomenal race in the 3K, hitting an NCAA provisional mark and just missing our school record.

We had a really nice meet as a team, and gave an outstanding SVSU team all they could handle.  This meet is becoming a highlight of our indoor schedule, and is a really nice springboard into GLIACs in a few weeks.  If we keep working hard and recovering well, this team is going to do some big things before the end of the indoor season."

PROVISIONAL MARK
Freshman Reagan Justice (Canton, Mich. / Salem) earned a provisional mark in the 3,000m run by becoming just the third person in school history to run a sub-10 minute time in the event (9:58.18).  The last was in 2015 by Kayla Balfour and Lauren Gagnon.

EVENT WINNERS
Junior Makayla Sumrall (Roseville, Mich.) won the 60m dash with a provisional time of 7.63.  It was her third provisional time of the indoor season.  She also notched a PR in winning the 200m dash in 25.47, which was the fourth-fastest time in program history.

Freshman Emily Gordon (Northville, Mich.) won the mile in 5:09.58, which is the sixth fastest time in school history, and the best time since Jackie Feist at the 2019 GLIAC Championships.
