ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's outdoor track and field squad competed on Friday and Saturday at the Oakland University Elaine Leigh Invite.
Junior
Makayla Sumrall (Roseville, Mich.) broke two school records, her own mark in the 100m dash (twice) and in the 200m dash by 0.43.
100m Dash
Sumrall shattered her own school record in the prelims running an 11.69 to earn the No. 1 seed for the finals. Then bettered that mark to win the event crossing the finish line in 11.64. Sumrall ran an 11.79 last month at the Texas State Bobcat Invite.
Senior
Aliyah McDonald (Kingston, Jamaica) placed 10th in a time of 12.35.
200m Dash
Sumrall continued her record-breaking day by eclipsing the school record of 24.75 set six years ago today by Dazmonique Carr. Sumrall ran a 24.32 to finish second.
McDonald placed ninth (25.69), while freshman
Kay-Lee McSwain (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) was 29th (27.94) and sophomore
Macie Ries (Mason, Mich.) finished 33rd (28.42).
400m Dash
Freshman
Renae Kutcha (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) ran a 59.30 to finish 10th, while senior
Yasmine Affes (Northville, Mich.) placed 15th (1:00.56). Kutcha's time improved on her outdoor best and was the seventh-fastest in school history.
800m Run

Kynnedee Cowles (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) was WSU's top performer in this event running a 2:27.03, while sophomore
Emily Esker (Livonia, Mich. / Franklin) ran a 2:30.99.

On Friday evening, senior
Ashley Defrain (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) led a trio of Warriors by posting the seventh-fastest time in school history (4:48.48), which was a personal-best by over 11 seconds. Esker finished 17th (5:04.25), while freshman
Layla Martini (Casnovia, Mich. / Kent City) placed 23rd (5:14.39).
5000m Run
On Friday evening, freshman
Mattie Drennan (Clarkston, Mich.) had a four-second personal best finishing 11th in a time of 18:33.73. Senior
Chloe Wandell (Muir, Mich. / Ionia) crossed the finish line in 19:05.21, which was a season best by 25 seconds. Sophomore
Jillian Vera (Saugatuck, Mich.) finished 25th (20:04.71), while freshman
Annalee Misch (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) ran unattached (19:14.66).
100m Hurdles
McDonald was the lone Warrior to advance to the finals after placing eighth in the prelims (14.95). McSwain and freshman
Makenzie Wellner (Menominee, Mich.) both posted all-time top-10 marks in school history. McSwain ran a 15.26, which ranks eighth, while Wellner's time of 15.46 is ninth. Ries placed 17th (16.15) with freshman
Parys Smith (Keego Harbor, Mich. / West Bloomfield) finishing 19th in a personal-best time of 16.41.
400m Hurdles
Wellner finished fourth in 1:06.04, while sophomore
Abigail Dunn (Northville, Mich.) placed fifth (1:06.19). Smith ran a 1:11.65 to finish 13th.
3000m Steeplechase

Robin Bresolin (LaSalle, Ont./ St. Thomas of Villanova) finished fourth in 12:15.18.
4x100m Relay
The quartet of McDonald, Sumrall, Affes, and sophomore
Mikaela Owen (Bridgman, Mich.) posted the fourth-fastest 4x100m relay time in school history finishing third in 47.67. It was the fastest time in nearly four years (47.65 at the 2018 GLIAC Championships).
4x400m Relay
The contingent of Affes, Kutcha, Dunn, Wellner finished third in a time of 4:00.49.
High Jump

Mikayla Williams (St. Charles, Mich.) finished eighth, equaling a season-best at 1.60m.
Long Jump
On Friday afternoon, Williams finished 10th with a best mark of 5.21m.

Williams placed third with a best mark of 11.26m.

Jasmine Correa (West Olive, Mich. / Holland West Ottawa) placed 14th (11.30m), while sophomore

MaKayla Rawls (Detroit, Mich. / Birmingham Seaholm) finished fifth with a best toss of 40.50m, which ranks third in program history.

Kaleigh Flowers (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Kentwood) was 16th (34.60m).
Price had a personal-best of 34.23m with senior

Izzy Taylor (Three Rivers, Mich.) recording marks of 29.78m and 29.08m, respectively.
Hammer
On Friday afternoon, Rawls led a quintet of WSU throwers by posting the fourth-best mark in program history. Her toss of 48.44m was a personal-best by almost five meters. Taylor finished 14th (44.03m), while Flowers was 26th (37.05m). McCuaig placed 32nd (33.96m), with Correa notching a distance of 31.50m in her first time competing in the event as a collegian.
Javelin
McCuaig recorded the ninth-best mark in school history with a throw of 27.44m. Taylor finished 12th with a best toss of 27.02m.
Up Next
Some members will travel to the Ashland Alumni Open on April 29-30 in Ashland, Ohio, while other squad members will compete at the Davenport Invite on Friday and Saturday.
