ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's outdoor track and field squad concluded the 2022 GLIAC Championships on Friday afternoon by winning five more conference titles and obliterating the previous school record of 77.83 points by totaling 139.50 points.
QUOTING COACH LOFDAHL
"We knew going in that this team had the opportunity to do something special, but they really exceeded expectations over the past two days. We talked about how something would go wrong, there are no perfect track meets, but that how we responded would dictate our performance. I could not be any prouder of this group of young women and what they accomplished.
"
Makayla Sumrall faced adversity this weekend and showed her character by winning two titles and setting a meet record.Â
Mikayla Williams did a tremendous job, scoring 23.5 points with two victories and a school record in triple jump.Â
Aliyah McDonald concluded her GLIAC career with seven great performances in seven conference meets, and a huge personal record in the 100 hurdles. Kenzie Wellner had a fantastic meet with an upset win and school record in the 400 hurdles.
"Our throwers had a breakthrough meet, led by
MaKayla Rawls and our hammer throwers, and
Teanna McCuaig in the javelin. The distance runners stepped up as well, with podium finishes from
Thailyia Christensen and
Reagan Justice and a great 5K from Ash Defrain.
"The icing on the cake was a phenomenal race and GLIAC title by our 4x400 relay team --
Yasmine Affes,
Renae Kutcha, Abby Dunn and Kenzie Wellner all stepped up to end the meet in style. Our coaching staff pours their hearts into this team, and it meant to a lot to us for our GLIAC colleagues to vote us as staff of the year. As a whole, this has been an amazing season, and we certainly are not done yet!"
