Gregory, a native of Curtisville, Penn., and a graduate of Detroit Pershing HS, lettered four seasons in golf during a career interrupted by the Korean War. He lettered the 1947 and 1948 seasons before serving four years in the Army, including a tour of duty in Korea, then returned to Wayne State to letter in 1952 and 1953. During his Wayne golf career Gregory emerged as one of the Tartars' finest linksters.
His best season came in 1953, the year he captained the Tartars' squad for Athletic Hall of Fame coach Laurence E. Russell. The Tartars in 1952 compiled their best-ever dual match record of 12-1. As Wayne's no. 1 golfer, he averaged 73.85 strokes in the team's 13 regular season matches.
Gregory advanced to the quarter-finals of the 1953 NCAA National Golf Championship held at Broadmoor Golf Course in Colorado Springs, Colo. In those days the NCAA championships were not divided between large and small schools; all participants played together in one championship.
In the first two rounds he defeated Washington's Donald Russell and Louisiana State's Tommy Morrom. Gregory bowed out in the quarter-finals to William Penn of Texas 4-3.
Later that same year Gregory won the State of Michigan Publinx Links Championship.
Gregory joined WSU for the 1947 season after a strong start in high school golf. He won the 1946 Detroit Public School League city title and earned All-City honors. He also won All-City Third Team football honors for Pershing in 1945. As the Tartars' number four golfer in 1947 he averaged 75.4 strokes per match.
Wayne's 1947 squad won the inaugural Mid-American Conference Golf Championship held at Warren Valley Golf Course. The Tartars were charter members of the MAC, but withdrew from the conference after the 1946-47 season. Among Gregory's teammates that season was Frank Jawor, Wayne State's current head men's golf coach.
After the 1948 campaign Gregory enlisted into the U.S. Army and was trained as a medical technician. During his first hitch he won the U.S. First Army's golf championship. He was moved into the active reserves in 1950, and in December that year was called back to duty and sent to Korea, where he served with both the infantry and medical corps until his discharge in September 1951.
Gregory then returned to Wayne to finish his golf career and education. He graduated from Wayne in 1954 with a Bachelor in Psychology, and also received a Master's in Clinical Psychology from Wayne State in 1957.
From 1954 to 1966 he worked for the city of Detroit as a clinical psychologist, then from 1966 until his retirement in 1992 Gregory had a private practice as a clinical psychologist. He is a long-time member of the Michigan Psychological Association.
Gregory has remained active in golf. He has participated in numerous Michigan Amateurs throughout the years, twice advancing to the semi-finals during his career. Currently he has a three handicap with the Michigan Seniors organization.
Gregory and his wife, Joan, reside in West Bloomfield, Mich. They are parents of sons Dan and Jeffery, and daughter Lisa.
