Dues was born in Pittsburg, KN, but moved to Detroit while in high school. He attended Northwestern High School, and then returned to graduate from Pittsburg High School. He played varsity football at WSU, but achieved his greatest fame as a track shot putter with his indoor best of 49-10 7/8, still the Tartar indoor record. Dues was the 1929 National High School shot put runner-up and the 1930 National Junior AAU Champion. In NCAA competition, he placed 5th in 1931, 4th in 1932, and 3rd in 1933. He won the Central Collegiate Conference titles in 1932 and 1933 and was District Champion in the 1932 Olympic Trials and second in the semi-finals, but was injured on his way to the Trial Finals in California.

Dues was the 1933 Penn Relays Champ and second in the National AAU Meet which coupled with the NCAA finish earned him an All-American berth.

After a lengthy teaching career, he was Director of the National Education Youth Corp at Northern High School. He graduated from WSU in 1933 and later earned M.A. and Specialist's degrees at WSU.
