Schileru, a native of Romania, lettered two years on the Wayne State men's swimming and diving team. During her two years at Wayne State, Schileru became the first woman in the nation to qualify and compete in the NCAA Championship event. Schileru earned varsity men's swimming and diving letters in the 1972-73 and 1973-74 seasons. She became the first woman in Wayne State history to compete on a men's varsity team and earned not one but two Wayne State varsity letters. In addition, she won the 1972-73 Wayne State swimming "Coaches' Award." Schileru's pioneering NCAA efforts of being the first woman to compete at the NCAA Championships is recognized in an exhibit at the NCAA Hall of Champions, located in Indianapolis, Indiana. During the NCAA Championship competition, Schileru finished 13th out of 50 participants. Schileru graduated from Wayne State in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in Biology, and in 1976 with her master's degree also in Biology. Schileru then continued her education by receiving her medical degree from Wayne State in 1981. She has been practicing medicine, in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, since 1986. Schileru resides in Horner, West Virginia.
