Hall of Fame
The top field goal shooter in Wayne State men's basketball history, Otis Evans, joins the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame. The 6-6 forward/center shot 67.7 percent from the floor while playing for the Tartars from 1988-92 under head coach Ron Hammye. His career shooting mark also ranks seventh all-time in NCAA Division II history.
Besides being the best shooter ever, Evans holds many spots for his four-year career in the WSU record book, including sixth in field goals made (472), sixth in rebounds (684), ninth in games played (106) and 10th in points (1130).
In his senior season, Evans set the school record for his shooting percentage of 70 percent (168-240), breaking his own record from the 1989-90 season. Nationally, Evans ranked third in field goal shooting his junior season and fourth his sophomore year.
Evans led the team in scoring during his sophomore season with 324 points and was the top shooter and rebounder on the team his final three seasons.
The Tartars advanced to the GLIAC Tournament championship game in Evans1 final year and the NCAA Division II Tournament where they defeated Saint Joseph1s, 63-56, before falling to Kentucky Wesleyan in the regional title game, 90-72, on March 14, 1992.
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honored Evans three times as he was a First Team selection in 1992, Second Team honoree in 1991 and was on the Honorable Mention team in 1990.
"I would have never imagined being selected for such a prestigious honor. My playing for the WSU Tartars and receiving an opportunity to further my education was all the acknowledgement I needed and greatly appreciate it. My years as a student-athlete at WSU encompassed more than basketball; what I gained from my teammates, coaches, professors and faculty has touched my life in ways I still feel to this day," said Evans.
A Detroit native and 1988 graduate of East Catholic High School, Evans earned his bachelor's degree in psychology in 2001. He has remained in Detroit since graduation. Evans and his wife, Marcita, have three children, Otis III, Morgan and Joshua.
