Dave Nowinski

Dave Nowinski, who earned four varsity letters in swimming (1979-83), was a four-time national qualifier and served as team captain his senior year, has been selected for the Wayne State University Athletic Hall of Fame induction class of 2005. Nowinski was a six-time All-American during his collegiate career for participation in the 500 freestyle (1981), 1650 freestyle (1981 and 1983), and 800 free relay (1981, 1982 and 1983). By the time his collegiate career concluded, Nowinski was the school-record holder in the 500 free, 1000 free and 1650 free and became the first WSU swimmer to break the 10-minute mark in the 1000 free. He was also a member of the school-record 800 free relay team. Nowinski graduated from Wayne State in 1984 with a bachelor's of science degree in biology. He also completed two master's degrees at WSU, in biology (1986) and teaching (1988). He presently teaches advanced placement chemistry, honors chemistry and biology at Fraser High School, where he is in his 19th season as the Ramblers' head swimming coach. During his coaching tenure, FHS has won several county championships and two league titles. Nowinski has been selected Macomb County Coach of the Year on several occasions and was Michigan's Region 1 Coach of the Year in 2003. Recently, Nowinski served as the treasurer and fundraising coordinator for his brother-in-law's bone marrow transplant. He has also help organize trips to Children's and Mt. Clemens General Hospitals by his high school athletes. Nowinski additionally volunteered for two years at St. John's Hospital while attending WSU. He presently resides in Macomb Twp. with his wife Lisa and four children: Tori (12), John (9), David (6) and Stewart (4).
