Former high jump champion Mark H. Smith, Jr., once an Assistant Dean of the College of Education at Wayne State, lettered in Track and Field from 1952-55 and served as the captain of the track team in 1954. He set high jump standards of 6'7 7/8" (Indoor) and 6'8 1/8 (Outdoor) during his varsity career. In 1953 Smith was the NCAA High Jump National Co-Champion with a leap of 6'8 1/8". In 1953 Smith was also named to the Track and Field Guide High Jump All-American Team. Smith received his B.S. in Education from Wayne State in 1956 and his M.A. in Education from Wayne in 1962. He completed his Ph.D. work in 1971 at Ohio State University.
