Irving Petross, who served as Principal of Mumford High School, was a four year track letterman at Wayne State from 1947-1950. He also lettered in 1947 and 1948 in football. He was the football team's second leading ground gainer in 1948, while he scored five touchdowns. He also had a 77 yard from scrimmage which still stands in the WSU top ten records. Petross was best known, though, for his track expertise. He ran on both the winning 440 and 880 relay teams in the 1949 Penn Relays. His time was :41.7 in the 440 and 1:26.0 in the 880. Petross was seven times a State Champion in sprints. He won a Silver Medal at the National AAU Championships in Madison Square Garden in 1958 for a second place finish in the sprint relay. While running for the Detroit Track Club, Petross ran on the 880 relay team which broke the world indoor record in 1958. He was 32 years old at this time. Also in 1958, he recorded a 9.6 100 yard dash, 18 times. His times in both the 100 (9.6) and the 220 (20.8) were Detroit Track Club records.
