Hall of Fame
Wayne State has a rich history in fencing and three-time NCAA Champion Ernest Simon has been a major part of that success. Simon is the third Australian WSU fencer to be inducted into the Wayne State University Athletic Hall of Fame, joining George Benko and Gina Farkashazy.
Simon was a four-year letterwinner for the Tartars from 1978-81. He won the foil national title during his freshman, junior and senior seasons, while finishing third his sophomore year. He and Benko are the only Tartar fencers to not only be named First Team All-American all four years, but also earn three national titles during their WSU career.
In 1978, Simon finished the season with a 35-4 overall record. His sophomore record was more impressive at 37-2, but he lost in the national semifinals. Simon had a perfect 18-0 mark during dual meets in 1980 and ended his career with national titles his final two seasons.
Simon helped the Wayne State squad to team titles in 1979 and 1980. The Tartars also placed third in '78 and were the runners-up in '81.
Simon came to WSU from his hometown of Melbourne, Australia. He has since returned to his native Australia.
