Holmes, selected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1975, spent 41 years at WSU, coming to the school in 1917 to coach the basketball, football, and track teams and be athletic director.

His 11 football teams were 35-35-9 with the 1918 inaugural team 4-0 and the 1921 squad 6-0-2-. His 12 basketball teams were 129-66, a .662 percentage with the inaugural 1917-1918 team 9-1 and the 1927-1928 team 18-1. His track teams (with the sport eliminated in 1943 and 1944) were 50-47 outdoors and 38-38 indoors. When he retired from football coaching, he started cross-country at WSU and had a 26-year record of 99-53, a .651 percentage.

As an athlete, the Carlton, Kansas native was a collegiate football, basketball, and track great at Oklahoma A & M. The late Holmes retired from WSU in 1958 and died in 1960.
