DETROIT - Ron Hammye, who has more victories than any other Wayne State men's basketball coach, enters the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame in February. Hammye has been part of the WSU basketball coaching staff for 19 years, including 13 as head coach. He finished his WSU head coaching stint with 212 wins and 154 losses from 1988-2001 for a .579 winning percentage, third highest in school history. The Bowling Green State University product was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year three times (1991-92, 1993-94, 1998-99) and the Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year twice. Under Hammye's tutelage, the Warriors/Tartars won a combination of six GLIAC championships: three regular-season titles in 1991-92, 93-94 and 98-99 (South Division), and three tournament titles in 1993, '94 and '99. He also coached a pair of league Players of the Year in Tony Goins (1998-99) and Michael Aaron (1993-94). Nine of the school's 14 team season records came while Hammye was on the bench, including two 25-win seasons (1993-94, 1998-99). WSU made the NCAA Division II Regional six times during Hammye's career including four as head coach. In 1993, WSU won the Great Lakes Regional and made its first trip to the final four. Hammye won a Great Lakes Regional as an assistant in 1986. In all, he coached 20 All-GLIAC players, 15 GLIAC All-Academic team members and nine players on the GLIAC All-Defensive squads. As a player at BGSU, Hammye started all four years for the Falcons from 1974-78 and led the team to the second round of the National Commissioner's Invitational Tournament as a freshman. The 47-year-old Genoa, Ohio, native and his wife, Amy, have one daughter, Jessica, and reside in Canton, Mich. Hammye is the athletic director at Livonia Franklin High School.
