Hall of Fame
Leo S. Maas served as the Wayne State swimming coach from 1939-59 and as the WSU baseball coach from 1942-1945. It was in swimming, though, that Maas was most successful. Maas brought WSU into national prominence in the 1940s. In 1940, the team finished fourth in the NCAA Championships. The following year, the Tartars placed third of all the teams in the country. Three swimmers under his tutelage earned All-American honors, Hall of Famers, Andy Clark, Guy Lumsden, and Bill Prew. Three others took second places in the NCAA competition. Maas, who was a member of the Great Lakes Swim Team in 1918 and 1919, also coached at Detroit Northwestern High School, where he won 10 of 11 Inter-City Championships. His career mark at WSU was 41-58. Maas resided in Royal Oak.
