John W. Lewis was a former Track and Field star for Wayne when he the school was called City College of Detroit. Lewis, a former Olympian, qualified on the 1600-Meter Relay Team during the 1928 games. Lewis also qualified as a regular member of the team and attended the games but did not run. Reasons for him not running were never disclosed. Lewis was also a World Record Holder for the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.3 seconds. The 1930 NAAU 440-yard dash champion was named to the AAU Collegiate All-American team. During the 1928 International Track Meet in Ghent, Belgium, Lewis won the 200-meter run and was a member of the winning 1600-meter relay team. In 1927 he was the Michigan High School Class A 440-yard dash champ. Lewis died on November 23, 1970.
