Hall of Fame
Andrews, a native of Detroit and graduate of Detroit Southeastern HS, is being inducted into the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame as a contributor/builder for Wayne State University Tartar Athletics. A three-time WSU graduate and holder of several high-level administrative appointments at Wayne State, Andrews has been a friend to Tartar Athletics and a confidant to many of Wayne State's athletic directors and coaches since arriving on campus in 1941.
Andrews has been at Wayne State his entire adult life except for a stint in 1943-46 in the U.S. Army during World War II, and from 1949-52 when he was an English teacher at Detroit Cass Technical High School. Other than that, from 1941 to his retirement in 1990 he was involved with Wayne State either as a student or administrator, many times as both.
After returning from the service in 1946, where he saw action in the Central and Pacific, and European Theaters, Andrews resumed his studies at Wayne State, and received his Bachelor of Arts in Speech and English in 1948. While working at Detroit Cass Tech Andrews began his post-graduate studies at Wayne State.
In July 1952 Andrews began his five-decade administrative career at Wayne State, joining the Admissions department as a counselor. He served in that position until 1958. In 1955 he received his Master of Arts in Speech from WSU.
In 1958 Andrews was promoted to assistant director of Admissions, then in 1962 he was promoted again to assistant director of University Development. From 1967-82 Andrews served as first associate director of Alumni Relations and then its director. In 1982 he began his appointment as WSU's first-ever associate vice president for Alumni Relations.
In 1966 Andrews completed work on his Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Supervision from Wayne State University.
As associate vice president and Alumni director Andrews helped in several football and athletics fund raising projects, and used his network in alumni and community relations to promote Tartar Athletics and provide support to a myriad of athletic-related endeavors. Andrews was influential with the creation and development of the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a member of its Board of Directors from its charter year of 1976 to 1991.
He set-up several alumni meetings in association with varsity athletic events during his career, including football games against Temple, Coast Guard, Illinois-Chicago, Kalamazoo College, and the Slippery Rock game in 1981 held at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Andrews helped initiate the Tartar Club for fund raising, and worked with several athletics donors, including one of today's other inductees, Vic Hanson, WSU Hall of Famer William A. Prew, and BilL Beckenhauer.
He has organized the annual Alumni Day at Wayne State Stadium each football season, and was also part of the planning committee for the inaugural ceremony when the Matthaei Building was dedicated in 1967. As an admissions counselor and assistant director Andrews assisted Wayne's athletic coaches in recruiting and admissions matters.
His professional associations include Phi Delta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Council for the Achievement and Support of Education, Michigan Alumni Council (president 1972-74), and the Mackenzie Honor Society. In 1990 Andrews was honored by the CASE with its CASE FIVE Award.
Andrews and his wife, Shirley, reside in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. They are parents of two WSU graduates, daughter Krystyne and son Mark.
