Jack Rice was a 1945 graduate of Wayne State and was the first four-letterman in the school's history. Rice also captained each of the four sports for at least one season while competing at Wayne State. He won a total of nine letters during his collegiate career. The breakdown is as follows: Tennis (3); Baseball (2); Basketball (2); and Football (2). Rice has been mentioned as one of the top collegiate athletes within Michigan universities for his accomplishments while attending Wayne.

Rice was a 1936 graduate of Northwestern High School and received his degree from Wayne in 1945 and his master's in 1955, also from Wayne. Jack coached golf and tennis at Denby High School. He also coached basketball and baseball for 10 seasons and served as Denby's assistant football coach for 20 prep seasons.
