Watson, a Cooley High School product, was the first fencer to ever win four NCAA All-American certificates, turning the trick in 1947-48-49-50. Only one other fencer has done that since-Wayne State's Greg Benko in 1973-74-75-76 in foil.

Watson won four Tartar fencing letters in foil and sabre, and had one NCAA 6th place finish, two 4th place finishes, and a 2nd place spot as a senior.

He earned an industrial engineer degree and worked in Los Altos, CA. He was 146-17 in dual meets including 108-13 in sabre. In his senior year, WSU was host for the NCAA Championships. His sophomore team finished 7th in the NCAAs, WSU's highest finish during the Beal de Tuscan coaching regime.
