Gary L. Bryce was the Wayne State softball coach for 40 years (1982-2021) and concluded his career as the NCAA Division II all-time winning softball coach with 1,340 victories.

His career win total ranks in the top 10 of all three divisions combined and in 2018 Bryce became the fourth NCAA softball coach to reach 2,000 games coached joining Michigan's Carol Hutchins, Margie Wright, and Central Michigan's Margo Jonker.

During his tenure, Bryce mentored 41 All-Americans, 12 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, seven GLIAC Freshmen of the Year selections, five GLIAC Pitchers of the Year and eight GLIAC Players of the Year.

The 2008 inductee into the NFCA Hall of Fame, he guided 190 GLIAC All-Academic recipients over his final 20 seasons.

His teams won 21 GLIAC championships (five regular-season, six tournaments, plus another 10 regular-season/tournament combined [1983-1996]), and three squads advanced to the College World Series (2003, 2010 and 2014).

Bryce had only five losing seasons in 40 years and averaged over 33 wins per season.

The 10-time GLIAC Coach of the Year, Bryce led WSU to 23 NCAA Tournament appearances, which ranks sixth in D2 history.

His 2010 team earned a school record 52 wins and he finished his coaching tenure with a 535-243-2 record in GLIAC regular-season contests, along with a 1,340-793-8 overall mark.

In 2016, WSU honored Bryce by re-naming the Warrior home park Gary L. Bryce Field.
