Chalmer G. Hixson served as Director of the Division of Health and Physical Education and Athletic Director at Wayne State University from 1971-1981. Dr. Hixson came to WSU from Ohio State University having had a distinguished career in professional physical education and athletics. He brought WSU and the Division a strong belief in the value of athletic participation and considers his greatest achievement to be that of helping keep many students involved in athletics. Dr. Hixson guided the University into the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1975. As a member of the Conference, WSU won three and tied for another GLIAC President's Cup Trophy. Also, from 1975 to 1981, the performance of the WSU teams brought the athletic department nine legislative citations from the Michigan House and Senate. Chalmer's contributions to athletics at WSU were many as were his efforts at the state and national levels. He established the Michigan Athletic Directors section of MAHPERD, served on the NCAA Council, the NCAA Football Rules Committee, and the NCAA Committee on Sports for the Handicapped, and chaired the NCAA Steering Committee. He is responsible for the formation of the prestigious WSU Athletic Hall of Fame. He retired from the University in 1981 and resides in Columbus, Ohio.
