Paola Sacchetti was a four-time (1991-92 through 1994-95) women's fencing All-American during her career at Wayne State University. Sacchetti, a native of Milan, Italy, was named to the All-America Second Team in 1992, her first year at WSU. She compiled a 99-19 mark as a sophomore and finished in fifth place in the women's foil to earn Second Team All-America honors at the 1993 NCAA Championship hosted by Wayne State. The following year she placed 12th at the NCAA Championship to earn Honorable Mention All-America accolades after recording an 89-19 mark. In her senior season, Sacchetti had a 124-14 record (89.9 winning percentage) leading the WSU women's foil team to a 16-7 regular-season record. At the 1995 NCAA Championship held in South Bend, Ind., she had her best national finish, third behind Penn State's Olga Kalinovskaya and Notre Dame's Maria Panyi to earn First Team All-America honors. Over the final three years of her collegiate career, she won 85.7 percent of her matches (312-52). Sacchetti graduated cum laude in 1995 with a B.S. in biological sciences. She also received her Doctor of Philosophy degree in cellular and clinical neurobio from Wayne State. Following graduation, she spent four years in Lille, France, as postdoctoral fellow in molecular biology. She recently moved to Stockholm, Sweden, and is working as a molecular neurobiologist at the Karolinska Institute.
