Carlos, a native of Detroit and graduate of Mt. Clemens HS, lettered three seasons in football as one of the Tartars' all-time top punters. He earned letters in the 1950, 1951 and 1952 seasons. Carlos also played as a two-way back for Wayne. He was also the track team's number one pole vaulter until a dislocated shoulder injury ended his promising career. During his Wayne career, Carlos set numerous single-game, single-season, and career punting records. His single-game records were for eight punts versus Louisville in 1952, 282 yards punted versus Detroit in 1950, and a 45.0 per punt average versus Valparaiso in 1952. He also set the single-game record for the longest punt of 75 yards against Iowa State in 1951. Carlos punted for a single-season record 1,544 yards in 1950. He set Tartar career records for the number of punts made (131) and yards punted (4,341). After the 1950 Detroit game, Carlos was named the athlete-of-the-game. He also earned the same honor later that season against Eastern Michigan when he rushed for 120 yards and scored two touchdowns. Carlos served as Wayne's 1952 co-captain with Dick Brown. In his first season at Wayne, Carlos suffered a shoulder injury in the Temple game that limited his playing time for the remainder of the season, and ended his promising pole vaulting career. A 1947 Mt. Clemens graduate, Carlos attended and played freshman football and track at the University of Illinois in 1947-48. He was the football team's first string fullback, and he pole vaulted in track. After one year at Illinois, he returned home to work in a factory. WSU football coach Herb Smith found out Carlos was back home and recruited him to attend and play for Wayne. In 1953, Carlos was inducted into the Wayne State Mackenzie Honor Society, and he is currently on the honor society committee. He earned two WSU degrees, a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1953 and a Master of Arts in Education in 1969. After graduating from WSU, Carlos played four seasons of semi-professional football with the Detroit Tars and Detroit Raiders. Carlos began his long teaching and coaching career after graduation. He has coached boys' football, basketball, track and cross country at sever Detroit area high schools. At Detroit Denby High School, Carlos led the school to its first state district basketball championship in 1962-63, an din 1962 led the cross country team from 18th place in the P.S.L. meet the previous season to a second place finish. At Detroit Henry Ford High School from 1963-75, Carlos coached the basketball team to its first state district title in 1973. Greg Kelser of Michigan State and the Detroit Pistons was on his team. He also coached two track standouts at Henry Ford - Mike Holt, who broke the state 440 record twice and played for Michigan State and the Dallas Cowboys - and Mike Schmidt, who broke the P.S.L pole vault record and later was a member of Wayne State's track team. Carlos also led the Henry Ford football squad to a 7-1 record in 1965, and was named the Detroit News P.S.L Coach-of-the-Year. From 1975-1981, Carlos coached football at L'Ance Creuse High School. Carlos is father of five children with his first wife, Judy, who died in 1981. They are Robin, Autumn, Dawn, Lark (who is deceased) and Duke.
