Kopins, a native of West Bloomfield, Michigan, lettered four years on the Wayne State men's swimming and diving team. During her four years at Wayne State, Kopins garnered All-American honors four times during her career, as she and her twin sister were the only female divers on the team at that time. Kopins earned varsity men's swimming and diving letters in the 1983-84, 1984-85, 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons. At the 1986 NCAA Championships, she and her twin sister, Lisa, were the lone representatives for Wayne State University and finished in 22nd place - the best finish ever for Wayne State in that sport. Both she and her sister entered Wayne State on a four year music scholarship with no immediate intention to compete in diving. At the 1985 NCAA Championships, Kopins finished 16th on the one meter board where she earned Honorable Mention All-American honors. The following season, she finished sixth on the one meter board to earn All-American honors. At the 1987 NCAA Championships, she finished seventh on the three meter and eighth on the one meter boards to earn two All-American honors. In her final year of competition, Kopins finished third at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championships while competing against 32 men. After graduating from Wayne State in 1987 with a bachelor of arts degree in Music Industry Management, Kopins worked for a research firm that test marketed Top 40 music. After starting her family, she also coached summer league dive team for nine years in Baltimore, and played in the University of Maryland Baltimore County Symphony Orchestra for eight years. She is currently working on a second bachelor's degree in Nutrition from Morgan State University in Baltimore Maryland, and is hoping to become a registered dietician. Susan and her husband, Patrick, have two sons (Christopher and Eric) and live in Sparks, Maryland.
