Stone, a native of Detroit and graduate of Southfield HS, is one of the premier women's basketball players in WSU history. A four-year letterwinner from 1977-78 to 1980-81, Stone left Wayne State with 10 career and four single-season records. She also lettered one season, 1978, on the Tartars' softball team. A four-year starter at point guard for the Tartars, Stone set Wayne's career scoring record of 1,116 points, breaking the old mark of 1,088 set by WSU Hall of Famer Mary Carney in 1974-77. She was the second women's basketball player ever to score over 1,000 points in a career at Wayne State. As a point guard, she was also the team's playmaker, setting the Tartar career record for assists with 431. Her other career records include most games played (106), field goals made (468), field goals attempted (1,174), free throws made (180), free throws attempted (301), personal fouls (317), games disqualified (38) and turnovers (468). In her last season at Wayne, 1980-81, Stone set four single season marks for assists (156), steals (114), games disqualified (13) and turnovers (157). She was a three-time All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) honoree, making the second team in 1978079 and the first team in 1979-80 and 1980-81. Along with forward Monice Thomas, Stone co-captained the 1980-81 Tartar squad that was ranked first all season by the Michigan Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW). As an outfielder on Wayne State's softball squad in 1978, Stone finished second on the squad with a .627 slugging percentage. In 1982-83, while completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, Stone joined the coaching staff at Hamtramck St. Florian High School, reuniting with Jill Eulitz, the coach responsible for recommending her to Wayne State. Eulitz, a former Tartar basketball player in the mid-1970's, was Stone's high school coach at Southfield, and she encouraged Stone to enroll and play at Wayne State. While teaching at St. Florian Stone also assisted Eulitz coach the girl's basketball team the one season. She also coached St. Florian's junior varsity team and CYO basketball. After receiving her BA in 1983, she joined Wayne State's coaching staff as an assistant to Kim Mayden. She remained at WSU until 1986, then moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and took a position in private business. At Southfield High School, Stone was an outstanding athlete, earning all-league honoree in three sports, basketball, volleyball and softball. She was named the school's Athlete-of-the-Year, the first time a woman has ever won the award. Stone also earned the South Optimist Club's Dave Wieland Award. Stone continues to play recreation basketball and softball in the Grand Rapids area. Single, she resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
