Januszkiewicz Sweeney, a native of Hamtramck and graduate of Hamtramck St. Florian HS, was one of Wayne State's top women's basketball players in the 1980's. She had an impressive two-year career at WSU, lettering in 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons. Januszkiewicz played 55 games for WSU, and almost became the fifth player at that point to score at least 1,000 points as a Tartar, finishing with 991 career points. She led the team both seasons in scoring, field goal percentage, and rebounding. She averaged 16.4 points per game and shot 48.5 percent from the floor her junior year, and had a 19.7 scoring average and 50.6 shooting percentage as a senior. Januszkiewicz averaged 9.9 rebounds per game during her Wayne career. She tied one Tartar team record, converting all eight of her free throw attempts against Hillsdale for a 1.000 completion percentage. Her career high for points scored in a game was 34 in her junior year, then the second-highest single-game total in Wayne history. Her 34-point effort came against Grand Valley State. During her senior year, Januszkiewicz scored 32 points against Eastern Michigan. Januszkiewicz was a team co-captain both seasons at Wayne, and upon conclusion of each season was named to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Basketball First Team. After the 1984 season, Januszkiewicz was also named the GLIAC's Most Valuable Player, and she also earned Women's Basketball All-Academic status as well. In addition, she was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America/GTE Academic All-District IV Team. Januszkiewicz joined Wayne State as a transfer from Macomb (Mich.) Community College (MCC) where she played two years of basketball. She enjoyed a successful playing career at MCC. Both seasons she was named the team's MVP, and she served as captain both years. Januszkiewicz also earned Honorable Mention All-America and First Team All-State, All-Region and All-MCCHA honors both seasons. After the 1982 season MCC named Januszkiewicz as its Female Athlete-of-the-Year, and she was inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame. At St. Florian High School, Januszkiewicz played basketball, volleyball and softball. On the hardcourt she was named the team MVP all four seasons, and was also selected All-Catholic and All-League four straight seasons. Januszkiewicz captained both her junior and senior squads. In volleyball she was the senior team captain and MVP, and twice earned All-Catholic and All-League recognition. In Softball Januszkiewicz was senior team captain and MVP, and earned All-League and All-Catholic honors as a senior. Januszkiewicz was a member of St. Florian's National Honors Society and a honors graduate, and she also earned the school's Daughters of the American Revolution Award. She earned the school's Female Athlete-of-the-Year Award in 1980. Januszkiewicz graduated from WSU in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy, and is board certified in occupational therapy. For eight years she worked at Wyandotte General Hospital's adolescent psychiatry department, and for the past three has been a staff therapist for industrial rehab at St. Johns Hospital and Medical Center. Januszkiewicz and her husband, John, reside in Warren, Mich., and are parents of one son, Grant.
